how to trust God in difficult times

This post is all about helpful tips on how to trust God in difficult times. If you are going through a challenging season right now and are struggling to keep your confidence in God, you need to read this.

We live in a world where difficulties and trials are inevitable. While we find it easy to trust God when everything’s going well, it can be challenging to do so when everything seems to fall apart and we don’t understand why.

So what do we do when we're walking through our darkest valleys? Or when we're in difficult seasons of waiting?

How do we keep on trusting God when we're facing tough times? How do we keep on praying when nothing seems to change in our circumstances? How do we hold on to our hope in Christ?

In the past few years, I have dealt with the death of a parent, mental health struggles, physical health concerns, financial challenges brought about by the pandemic, and sickness of a family member that further exhausted us financially, mentally, and emotionally.

I felt so overwhelmed and exhausted. There were times when I felt hopeless and stuck. What kept me going was placing my hope in God, even when I couldn't understand what was happening.

I'm not perfect and there were times when I felt weak. To be honest, there were even times when I got tempted to doubt and feel like God had forgotten me. But He never failed to give me renewed strength and hope.

I'm sharing with you the things that helped me put my trust in God in my most challenging times. I hope these will help you in whatever it is you're going through right now.

1. Spend more time with God

I’ve heard a valuable piece of advice once that said, “When you don't feel like reading your Bible or praying to God, that’s the time when you need to do it the most.” I had to learn that spending time with God shouldn't be determined by my feelings. It is an intentional choice, and a crucial one, especially in challenging times.

It's in the darkest times of our lives when we strongly need to remind ourselves about who God is, what He can do, and His unchanging love for us. The way to do that is by spending time in prayer and reading the Bible.

I also find it encouraging to read about the lives of people in the Bible who trusted God even in the most trying times and how He had shown His power and faithfulness through them.

I couldn't count the number of times God has comforted me, called me back when I felt like I was drifting away, renewed my strength, and given me hope through His word.

My most raw and heartfelt prayers were also uttered during times of adversity. These prayers didn't always change my situation immediately, but they changed my heart. Talking to God and taking the time to listen to Him also gave me immense peace and joy, even in my darkest times.

2. Remember His past faithfulness

Reminding myself of the awesome things God has done in my life helped me learn how to trust God in difficult times. I may not know what lies ahead or exactly when the cries of my heart will be answered, but I'm sure of God's love for me. I'm certain that He wants the best for me and it's because I've experienced it in the past. God is unchanging. He loved us yesterday, He loves us today, and He will continue to love us for all eternity.

Sometimes, focusing too much on our problems can cloud this perspective. That's why it helps to bring to mind the great things He's done so that we can continue to fix our eyes on Him and His faithfulness.

3. Practice gratitude

Having an attitude of gratitude and worship changes our hearts in the midst of adversity. Being thankful isn't minimizing or denying the pain you feel, but it can surely shift your focus from the problems to the One who can solve them.

Being grateful even for the simple things can fill our hearts with joy even as we face hard times. Praising God also reminds us of His love and power, and this gives us more confidence to face and conquer trials.

One of the most powerful ways that we can impact lives for Christ is the way we respond to difficulties. When people see your calm, joyful, and thankful attitude in the middle of life's storms, you spark their curiosity. That could be the start of their desire to know God more.

4. Constantly Remind yourself of His promises

When we face challenges, we are often vulnerable to enemy attacks. We will be tempted to doubt, become anxious, or manipulate our way out of the situation.

Reminding ourselves of the many promises of God gives us comfort, peace, and hope. It reaffirms our hearts that He will never leave us nor forsake us and that He has great plans for us.

Here are some of my favorite promises of God:

God will always be with me.

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Isaiah 41:10

God has great plans for me.

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.

Jeremiah 29:11-13

God will always guide me.

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.

Psalms 32:8

God will provide all my needs.

And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:19

God will work everything out for my good.

And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.”

Romans 8:28

These are promises that you can always go back to especially when you feel weak and helpless. Conquer your fears with faith. Dispel the lies with His truths. Replace your worries with His reassurance.

5. Develop an eternal perspective

When things don't make sense to me, I ask God to help me develop an eternal perspective. I remind myself that all the hardships and pain I experience in this lifetime are just temporary because my eternal home is in heaven.

Believing that God has a unique purpose for me as He prepares me for eternity, puts things in perspective. I know that He will never allow anything in my life that doesn't have a purpose.

These trials may be necessary to mold me to become more like Christ. Perhaps these difficulties are to be used by God to encourage others or point people to Him.

Whatever His purpose may be, I can be certain that it is for my good and for His glory.

6. Seek Godly counsel and support

When things get too difficult to bear, it's extremely helpful to ask for counsel and support from someone we trust.

Seeking advice from someone who can provide advice that's aligned with God's word can help you defeat discouragement. Sometimes, we just need to be reminded about how much God loves us when our problems seem to make us forget.

There have been times when God used people to speak truth to my heart in moments when I needed it the most. It's like getting a hug from Him and feeling deeply comforted.

7. Be honest about how you feel.

Even about your unbelief and struggles. Surrender even your emotions to Him.

Being honest with God about how I truly feel has been a game-changer in my prayer life. It has made me feel closer to God than I have ever been.

We don't have to pretend that we have all things together or that we're perfectly okay. God sees our hearts and He understands exactly how we feel.

We can pour out our hearts to Him, and He wants that. When we do so, we can expect Him to fill us with the kind of comfort and love that we can never find elsewhere.

8. Practice patience

Trusting God involves a great deal of patience in hard times. This is a trait that I believe God wants us to continuously learn and develop when we face tough times.

Our minds are limited and we don't see the big picture, but God does. He knows everything, from beginning to end. He sees our future, but He doesn't reveal everything to us all at once. I think that's a good thing because we'd surely feel too overwhelmed if He did.

Why should we be patient?

Some of the plans God has for us take time. Sometimes, He still needs to prepare us or arrange the circumstances before He brings those plans into reality.

Thus, it's important to be patient as we keep on trusting God. Waiting on Him is never wasted time. (Related post: Waiting on God: 5 Reasons Why It's Worth It)

9. Develop an attitude of surrender

When difficult times stretch longer than you had expected, you might begin to feel distracted, confused, or even hurt, thinking that God has forgotten you.

This couldn't be farther from the truth. One of my favorite promises of God is that He will never leave us nor forsake us.

Learning to surrender to God will give us comfort and peace in times of adversity. During a difficult season of my life, I learned that it wasn't my job to figure everything out. I didn't know why things were happening, I didn't know how to solve them, or when my suffering would end. But I realized that God knows all things. His thoughts and ways are higher than mine. Thus, I can trust Him as He accomplishes His good purpose in that season of my life.

When I eventually surrendered everything to God, including my hopes, my fears, and my pain, I started to have peace and joy even amid suffering. It wasn't easy to say, 'Lord, I really plead for this to happen. With my whole heart, I desire this. But Lord, not my will but Yours be done."

But when I fully surrendered everything to Him, I began to notice even more how His hand was at work in my situation. And through that challenging season, God had taught me the real meaning and the power of surrendering to Him. (Related post: 5 Helpful Tips on Surrendering to God)

10. Filter out negative thoughts

Entertaining a negative thought may seem as if it’s not a big deal, but it can spiral down to discouragement and hopelessness if you allow it.

In trying times, it's so easy to feel negative emotions, to blame others, to wallow in self-pity, or to lose hope. That's why it's important to manage our thoughts.

Be aware of what you think about and do not always believe them. Rather, filter your thoughts through God's word.

Does this thought align with the Bible? Does it align with what God thinks about me? Will this thought build me up or tear me down? Will God be pleased with this thought?

By asking these questions, you are guarding your mind from thoughts that are destructive. Replacing the negative thoughts with Biblical truths and God's promises will help strengthen your faith in Him.

Conclusion

You don't have to walk through the storms of life alone. You can trust God to give you comfort, strength, and hope when you feel like giving up.

Trusting God is a moment-by-moment decision and it always proves to be the best choice. As we continually know Him deeper and surrender to Him daily, we can have peace and joy even in the most turbulent seasons.

I hope these tips on how to trust God in difficult times will help you navigate through life's challenges with stronger faith and confidence in Him.
