What are the benefits of appreciating the simple things in life?

Do you know that gratitude can make you happier? From Harvard Health Publishing

“In positive psychology research, gratitude is strongly and consistently associated with greater happiness. Gratitude helps people feel more positive emotions, relish good experiences, improve their health, deal with adversity, and build strong relationships.”

The more you try to be grateful, the easier it is to notice the small things that are worth appreciating. It's like you're training the brain what to focus on.

When I try to start the morning with a thankful perspective and appreciate the little happy things that I can smile about, I find myself in a better mood throughout the day. I also feel that I can deal with challenging situations in a much calmer manner.

Try it and see the benefits trickling down to your well-being, relationships, and work life.

How can I live more mindfully and enjoy the simple, happy things?

Take a break

Whether it's just a quick walk or listening to music, taking short breaks will help you become less stressed and you can avoid feeling overwhelmed. When you're in a state of calm, it's easier to recognize and savor the simple, happy things.

The bonus? Taking breaks will also help you become more productive because you're allowing your brain to recharge.

Smile more

According to the University Of West Alabama, smiling and laughter have plenty of benefits to our physical and psychological health.

“Research shows that those who consciously or subconsciously smile more live better and longer.”

Smiling also triggers your body to release good hormones that make you feel good. Not only that, but it also contributes to better relationships, increased productivity, and stress relief.

Are you smiling now?

Write on a journal

Do you know that journaling can help you in hard times? According to this article by the University of California, Berkeley, the reason why journaling works is that it gives you an outlet to release your emotions instead of stuffing them down, which we know is harmful to our health.

Writing also allows us to organize our thoughts and experiences, giving us an opportunity to understand them from a different point of view. This will help make sense of the things we think about or go through, and be able to process them. This can lead to our personal growth.

By getting out your thoughts and emotions through writing, you can have a clear and more relaxed mind throughout the day.

Be present

Aside from making life more enjoyable, being in the present moment also benefits our mental and physical well-being. It can reduce stress levels by focusing on the present rather than worrying about the past or future.

It also improves our ability to concentrate and make decisions. Other great benefits include increased positive emotions and enhanced interpersonal relationships.
